Huawei Announces Breakthrough in 100G-PON Optical Access Technology

[Shenzhen, China, October 27, 2014]: Huawei today announced that their optical access innovation lab has made a breakthrough in 100G-Passive Optical Network (100G-PON) optical access. This new 100G-PON technology uses a hybrid time-division and wavelength-division architecture to support a 4 x 25 Gbit/s downstream rate and a 4 x 10 Gbit/s upstream rate, verified by way of the lab prototype and enables 100 Gbit/s access rate per port on existing optical distribution networks (ODNs). The technology also establishes compatibility between 100G PON and GPON/10GPON/40G TWDM PON, allowing carriers to execute seamless upgrades to future-proof access networks.

This new, faster technology system will be able to meet the increasing demands of home bandwidth, including cloud services, smart home services and 4K or 8K ultra-high definition videos. The 100G-PON system can also support backhaul for Fiber to the Curb / Basement / Office and mobile stations. Huawei are pleased to announce this highly anticipated optical access standard which expands on the existing 40G- time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM PON). The breakthrough also establishes compatibility between 100G-PON, Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks (GPON), 10G-PON and 40G-TWDM PON allowing carriers to execute seamless upgrades to future-proof access networks.

As part of the testing, the Huawei optical access innovation lab considered the three different methods available to improve PON access rates; increasing single wavelength rate, increasing the number of wavelength paths and improving the utilization of the electronic spectrum. Assessing the pros and cons of each method the lab developed an innovative solution that resolves the challenge of reducing the dispersion penalties which occur when the line rate reaches 25 Gbit per second, and eliminating the non-linear effect to increase the single-wavelength rate from 10 Gbit per second to 25 Gbit per second. Testing the 100G-PON over a 20km transmission the system successfully demonstrated it is fully compatible with other PON systems on the ODN. In the future, Huawei are confident the 100G-PON system will be able to support 200 Gbit per second per port by supporting more wavelength paths.
